The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. Title II of the ADA prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in all programs, activities, and services of public entities and requires state and local governments to complete an ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan to identify and remediate barriers to access.

The City of Yuma created the ADA Commission to advise the City Administrator and City staff in matters pertaining to the needs and interests of, and the barriers negatively-impacting, the disabled community.  The ADA Commission meets quarterly.  Past meeting agendas, summaries, and minutes are posted at the bottom of this page.

In 2023, the City of Yuma developed and adopted a Self-Evaluation and ADA Transition Plan to guide the City in removing barriers to access over the next several years.  This plan is in the process of being updated and once complete, the Self-Evaluation will include a comprehensive review of current City services, policies, and practices with the goal of operating all City services, programs, and activities so that they are readily accessible and usable by individuals with disabilities.  The Transition Plan will identify physical obstacles in each facility that limit accessibility of its programs or activities to individual with disabilities and specify the schedule to achieve compliance with Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act and steps that will be taken each year of the transition period.  A copy of the current ADA Transition Plan, ADA Notice, and ADA Grievance Procedure and form are provided below.

The City of Yuma is seeking input from interested persons to participate in the update of the City’s ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan. Feedback can be provided by completing an online survey or using an online map. The online survey allows the public to identify specific locations or facilities where barriers to access exist and to provide feedback on how the City is doing related to program accessibility. The online map is interactive and allows the public to identify specific locations or facilities where barriers to access exist. Feedback received prior to January 31, 2025, will be incorporated into the 2025 ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan. Feedback received after that time will be incorporated into the next Plan update.
