WORKING TO KEEP ILLEGAL ACTIVITY OUT OF RENTAL PROPERTY
The City of Yuma’s Crime Free Multi-Housing Program is designed to help owners of rental property, property managers, and tenants keep drugs, gang activity, and other illegal activity off their property. The program is a partnership between law enforcement, rental property owners, property managers, and tenants. The CFMH Program is a solution oriented program designed to give property managers the tools they need to assist them in removing crime from their communities and provide a safer environment for their tenants to live.
The Crime Free Multi-Housing Program consists of three phases that are implemented under the supervision of the Yuma Police Department. Property managers become certified after completing Phase I Property Manager Training and the property becomes certified upon successful completion of Phase II CPTED Inspection and Phase III Safety Social.
- Phase I Property Manager Training: An 8-hour class that property owners and managers are required to attend. The class is facilitated by a certified Crime-Free coordinator.
- Phase II CPTED Inspection: An on-site property inspection is conducted to determine if the property meets the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (C.P.T.E.D.).
- Phase III Safety Social and Full Certification: This event provides an opportunity for tenants to become familiar with the CFMH Program and to understand that they are partners in keeping themselves and the property safe. The property receives full certification which must be renewed annually.
Once all three phases are completed, the rental property will be granted permission to use the Crime Free Multi-Housing signs stating they have joined the Yuma Crime Free Multi-Housing Program. The City of Yuma currently has several certified Crime Free Multi-Housing rental properties, which can be recognized by the Crime Free Multi-Housing signs displayed at the property entrances.
If law enforcement, property managers, and tenants make a dedicated commitment to the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program with the principle guideline of crime prevention, the result will be safer apartment communities.
