Building Advisory Board

The Building Advisory Board is of a technical nature and requires one or more members to have specific technical expertise. The Board serves as an Advisory and Appeals Boards to the Building Safety Division and to the Community for Commercial Building Activity and codes. The Building Advisory Board normally meets on an as-needed basis only. A copy of the agenda will be posted on the City Hall bulletin board, the City web site and is available upon request at the City Clerk's Office, 24 hours in advance of a scheduled meeting.

Design and Historic Review Commission

The Design and Historic Review Commission (DHRC) exists to promote and protect the historic and architectural integrity of the City of Yuma. The DHRC reviews plans for development in our Aesthetic Overlay Districts (the gateway routes to the City) and within our three historic districts, Main Street, Century Heights, and Brinley Avenue. The Design and Historic Review Commission normally meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 4:00 p.m. at City Hall, One City Plaza. Please contact Planning and Zoning for a list of the application deadlines.

Hearing Officer

The Hearing Office presides over public hearings on behalf of the City of Yuma. The Hearing Officer is appointed by the City Administrator subject to the approval of the City Council and does not hold a city elective office concurrently with this position. The Hearing Officer hears and decides on applications for variances requests, temporary uses, expansion of non-conforming uses or structures, revocation or modification of variances, conditional use permits for soil remediation and for uses requiring a federal or state permit that are not otherwise listed in the Zoning Code. The Hearing Officer also can hear and decide certain types of appeals on land use decisions. These hearings are normally held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month of each month at 9:30 am at City Hall, One City Plaza. Minor Variance Committee

The Minor Variance Committee is a four person committee made up of City Staff. Similar to the Hearing Officer, the Minor Variance Committee hears and decides on applications for variance requests that are 20% or less of the dimensional requirement. These hearings are held on an as needed basis.

Planning and Zoning Commission

The Planning and Zoning Commission consists of seven members who are appointed by the City Council. The Commission hears cases on land use and makes recommendations to the City Council on annexations, general plan amendments, rezoning requests, preliminary and final subdivisions and text amendments to the zoning code as requested. The Planning and Zoning Commission has the final approval of Conditional Use Permit requests. The Case Review Planning staff presents customer and city initiated requests to the Planning and Zoning Commission and they provide support for this Commission. The Planning and Zoning Commission normally meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall, One City Plaza. Residential Advisory and Appeals Board

The Residential Advisory Board is of a technical nature and requires one or more members to have specific technical expertise in residential construction. The Board serves as an Advisory and Appeals Boards to the Building Safety Division and to the Community for Residential Building Activity and codes. The Residential Advisory and Appeals Board normally meet on an as-needed basis only. A copy of the agenda will be posted on the City Hall bulletin board, the City web site and is available upon request at the City Clerk's Office, 24 hours in advance of a scheduled meeting.

Who Can Serve on a City of Yuma Board or Commission?

Any person who lives within Yuma's City limits may serve on a board or commission. Several boards of a more technical nature require one or more members to have specific technical expertise. In order to be considered for a board or commission, an Boards and Commissions application must be filed in the City Clerk's Office.

How is a Person Selected?

When an opening occurs due to resignation or term expiration, City Council appoints an individual from the list of applications on file in the Office of the Mayor and Council. The individual is selected based on education, work experience and civic involvement as listed on the application. Formal appointment occurs at a regularly scheduled City Council meeting.
