Officer Gary Alan Maas - April 9, 1986
Officer Gary Maas was the first Yuma police officer to be killed in the line of duty. On April 9th, 1986 Officer Maas was gunned down while responding to a disturbance call at the Yuma bus depot where he confronted two men. One of the men started shooting at Officer Maas who was struck but was able to return fire, which killed one of the men. The other assailant was captured a week later in Oklahoma and later convicted of first degree murder.
Lieutenant Daniel Powell Elkins - July 4, 1995
Lieutenant Dan Elkins was killed on July 4th, 1995 after he and two other fellow Officers were conducting an investigation of missing items from the evidence room at the Southwest Border Alliance. Jack Hudson, an undercover officer assigned to the Alliance, was already in the building attempting to steal cash, guns, and drugs when Lieutenant Elkins and the other officers arrived. Hudson shot and killed Lieutenant Elkins and DPS Sgt. Mike Crowe after being confronted in the building. Hudson was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
