The Meter Services group is responsible for residential and commercial meter reading, construction (roving) meter reading, and the utilities warehouse and meter shop.

Water Service Connections

All residential and commercial water meters are read and billed along with any other applicable sewer and sanitation charges. Meters are manually read or read electronically using radio-equipped meters with an Automated Meter Reading system. Meters record in cubic feet with utility bills calculated in hundred cubic feet. The bills indicate usage in hundred cubic feet and also indicate the previous usage to compare.

All of the Meter Services staff must complete continuous educational and safety trainings to obtain and maintain Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) operator certifications, and enhance their professional development.

In the summer of 2023, the Utilities Department will begin a 6-year program to replace the existing drive-by automated meter reading system with cellular AMI.  Cellular AMI has many advanced features including a Customer Portal.  This will allow the customer to access their water usage in near real-time.  They will also be able to receive Leak Alerts to notify them of a potential leak within 24 hours vs the current 30-45 days.

Construction Meters

Construction (roving) meters are read according to a planned reading schedule, which is given to the customer at the time of sign-up. Meters are to be taken to the City of Yuma Thomas F. Allt Utilities Complex located at 270 W. 13th Street, Yuma, Az. on the dates and times indicated on the schedule. Failure to do so results in a fee charged to the account.
