38 U.S.C. § 101(2) provides: The term "veteran" means a person who served in the active military, naval, or air service, and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable.

13 CFR § 125.11 provides: A Reservist or member of the National Guard called to Federal active duty or disabled from a disease or injury incurred or aggravated in line of duty or while in training status also qualify as a veteran. 

The term “active duty” means— full-time duty in the Armed Forces, other than active duty for training.

The term “active duty for training” means—full-time duty in the Armed Forces performed by Reserves for training purposes.

38 U.S.C. § 101(10) provides: The term “Armed Forces” means the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard, including the reserve components thereof. *Note: The United States Space Force also qualifies as a member of the Armed Forces due to its official creation on December 20, 2019 when the National Defense Authorization Act was signed into law.

The plaques are made of solid granite and are eight inches high and 16 inches wide. Each plaque is individually engraved with the service member's name, rank, dates of service, and includes his or her service emblem.

Due to the size of the plaque, only 18 letters are allowed for the service member's name, and separately, only 18 letters are allowed for the service member's rank at the time of discharge (separation from service).

The City has partnered with a local engraver who requires at least 3 plaques to be submitted at a time in order to complete the plaque etching process. This process can take up to a few months to complete. 

Once the plaques are ready for pickup, the engraver will notify the Armed Forces Park Coordinator. After the plaques have been picked up, the Armed Forces Park Coordinator will contact the Parks and Recreation Department, and the purchaser of the plaque, in order to arrange for the mounting of the plaque in the Armed Forces Park.

A military ceremony for the mounting of the plaque may be requested by contacting American Legion Post 19 at (928) 344-3441.
