The Long Range Planning staff are responsible for administering the City of Yuma's General Plan, managing annexation requests and completing certain types of development agreements. The staff additionally initiate and manage updates to the City of Yuma facility plans. Staff is responsible for projecting for growth as well as proposing updates to the many types of plans that affect and shape that growth. Although the ideas and proposed updates for the plans are always evolving and changing, it is up to the City Council and ultimately the citizens of the City of Yuma that formally adopt them when the General Plan is placed on a ballot and taken to the voters every 10 years for the decennial update.

The Decennial Update of the General Plan was adopted by the voters on November 8th, 2022. The General Plan is an extensive document that provides guidance for the social, economic, environmental and overall physical development of the City of Yuma. It consists of a series of interlinked chapters addressing state required elements/subjects. Also included in each chapter are policies and objectives that identify a way to reach goals for future development.
