Events Happening In A Park Near You

Splash Out Crime Night is Saturday

The 2012 Splash Out Crime Night takes place 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug.4 at Valley Aquatic Center, 4381 W. 18th St. Entry to the event is only $1 and features unlimited access to Yuma's favorite pool complex, music, games, prizes, a dunk tank and lots of fun. Concessions will be available. This anticipated annual fundraiser is hosted by the City of Yuma Parks and Recreation Department, Yuma Police Department and 78-Crime Stoppers Inc. for the purpose of raising funds for 78-Crime, the anonymous crime tip line that offers reward money for applicable crime tips. These rewards are made possible through donations and support from the community and are coordinated by 78 Crime Stoppers Inc., a nonprofit organization run by a volunteer board of directors to serve the greater Yuma area.

Late Night 2 person OTL Softball Tournament
Dates: Aug. 11
Days: Saturday
Time: Games start at 6 p.m.
Location: Kennedy Athletic Complex
Fee: $40 per Team; $50 after registration deadline.
Format: Separate Men's and Women's Divisions. Each team is guaranteed round robin format followed by championship playoff.

ASA Men's Class D 12-inch Slow Pitch Western National Tournament
Dates: August 31 - September 3, 2012
Location: Kennedy Athletic Complex
Fee: $375.00 per Team; $24 ASA Sanction Fee
Registration: June 4, 2012 through August 23, 2012

Outdoor Recreation
Sunrise Kayaking
Date: August 11, 2012
Day: Saturday
Time: 5:00 am
Location: Gateway Park
Age: 6 and Up (participants 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult)
Fee: $20 for all
Nothing beats an Arizona Sunrise. Join us as we'll guide you down the Colorado River in an open water kayak capturing all the splendor of this amazing habitat as it springs to life just as the sun peaks over the horizon.

Archery
Date: August 25, 2012
Day: Saturday
Time: 10:00 am to 11:45 am OR 12:00 pm to 1:45 pm
Location: North End Community Center Age: 8 and Up (Parent / Guardian must stay with children under 16)
Fee: $15.00; $10.00 with City resident credit
The sport of archery is here and ready for your shot at the Bull's Eye. This class will teach the sport of archery in a safe and fun way. Students will learn all the basic mechanics of compound bow shooting and range safety guidelines. Sign up now for this fun and exciting class.

Aquatics
Aqua Zumba
Session III: August 6, through August 31, 2012
Days: Monday through Friday
Time: 7:15 pm to 8:15 pm
Location: Kennedy Pool
Ages: All Ages
Fee: Drop In $4.00 (cash only)
Get your hearts pumping to the Hot Latin rhythms of Aqua Zumba. This is a great way to get in shape while having fun the pool.

Teen Activities
Yuma Babe Ruth (Fall Baseball)
Dates: September 3 through November 15, 2012
Days: Monday through Thursday
Time: 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm
Location: Various baseball fields
Ages: 13 - 19
Fee: $65.00
The season may be changing but here in Yuma we still play baseball! Yuma Babe Ruth presents another season of fall baseball for all 13 to 19 year old baseball players. Sign up now for a great experience swinging for the fences.

Events Happening at Historic Yuma Theatre & Yuma Art Center

Historic Yuma Theatre and Yuma Art Center events, 254 S. Main St.

  • Summer Six Pac 2012 - A summer of exceptional live theater experience runs through Aug. 12. Next up is Yuma Community Theater's presentation of "It Had To Be You," August 3, 4, 5, and 10, 11, 12 (7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays). This funny and touching play, written and originally performed by Renee Taylor (the mother on the TV show "The Nanny"), and her husband Joseph Bologna, tells the story of a failed actress who wants to find love and success in New York, instead finds a successful TV commercial director. By holding him hostage on a snowy Christmas Eve, she tries to convince him to be her partner both professionally and personally. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for children 13 and under.

Daily Youth (17 and under) Admission: $2; $1.50
with City resident credit
Daily Adult (18 and over) Admission: $4; $3 with

Kennedy Pool 23rd Street and Kennedy Lane, is open 1 to 5:45 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Aug. 5.

Take Pride In Yuma

There were 47 cases of graffiti abated this reporting period.

Graffiti cleanup and vandalism currently costs the Yuma taxpayers over $200,000 per year. Please help us reduce vandalism by reporting incidences of crime to 78-Crime (782-7463) and graffiti to the Graffiti Busters hot line, 329-2828. If you witness a crime in progress, call 911.

Parks and Recreation This Week

Activities for the week of July 25-31:

  • 47 incidents of graffiti were responded to and abated
  • 513 rounds of golf played at Desert Hills and Desert Hills Par 3 golf courses
  • 299 meals were served at Desert Hills Bar & Grill
  • 17 events held at the Yuma Civic Center with an attendance of 3,581
  • 218 games played which is inclusive of all sports
  • 2 events held at the Yuma Art Center with an attendance of 531
  • 321 event tickets sold for Art Center and Civic Center
  • 147 ramadas, parks, and fields were used
  • 974 customer service transactions
  • 62 programs offered by Parks and Recreation
  • 6,596 people attended Parks and Recreation programs
