05/23/2012 | Sgt. Clint Norred, Patrol

Students from H.L.Suverkrup Elementary School recently raised money to purchase the Yuma Police Department K-9 Unit ballistic vests. There will be an award ceremony at H.L.S. Elementary School's cafeteria at 1590 South Avenue C on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 12:30 pm.

Crane H.L. Suverkrup Elementary School Principal Karri Neumann came up with the idea after speaking to one of our police K-9 handlers. Principal Neumann said, "I challenged our students with the idea and they were very motivated." H.L.S. students responded by raising $2,100 through one fundraiser and are excited to present the vests to the Yuma Police Department.

Chief of Police John Lekan said, "I am very pleased that H.L.S. students were motivated to raise money for their local police department. Their work has paid off and is an excellent example of the drive and community involvement by our local students. I am proud of them."

The Yuma Police Department K-9 Unit will be on hand and provide a K-9 demonstration for the students. The local media is encouraged to attend and may be on the school premises at noon to allow for set-up. Police and school officials will be present to complete interviews.
