10/08/2011 | Mike Erfert, Public Information Officer

On Saturday October 8, 2011 shortly after 11:00 am a fire was reported in an apartment at Catalina Square Apartments, 3000 South Catalina Drive. Yuma Fire Department personnel arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the apartment. Firefighters entered the apartment to find the fire was coming from the bedroom.

A search of the apartment located the resident in a closet near the front door. The resident was removed from the apartment and firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. The resident, a 65 year old male, was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center.

The fire was extinguished before it could spread beyond the bedroom where it originated. Damage was limited to a portion of the bedroom and some of its contents. Other residents of the apartment complex were evacuated from their rooms, but allowed back in when the fire was confirmed not to have spread, and checks of the air quality showed it was safe to do so.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
